The Oxford Online Placement Test is a tool designed to measure test takers’ ability to function communicatively at different levels of English language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Test format

Use of English

Part 1

Description: Complete a short dialogue with the appropriate grammatical form or lexical item

Testing focus: Grammatical form, lexical precision

Response type: Four-option multiple choice

Questions: Ten tasks

Part 2

Description: Read a short dialogue and identify what a speaker means

Testing focus: Pragmatics: understanding explicit and implied meaning

Response type: Three-option multiple choice

Questions: Ten tasks, each with one or two questions

Part 3

Description: Type the missing word in gapped text with the appropriate grammar or lexis

Testing focus: Grammatical form, lexical precision

Response type: Gapped text. For A1–C2, test takers type their answers. For Pre–A1, test takers select their answers.

Questions: One task, seven questions

Part 1

Description: Listen to a short dialogue and identify what the speaker means

Testing focus: Pragmatics: understanding explicit and implied meaning
